TIEZA approves the Final Comprehensive Tourism Master Plan of Corregidor

The Final Comprehensive Tourism Master Plan will help usher Corregidor Island toward sustainable development and historical preservation

On December 14, 2020, the final meeting for the Comprehensive Tourism Master Plan of Corregidor Containing a Conceptual Development Plan of the Surrounding Islands was conducted. Members of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), the TIEZA Board, and the Palafox Associates team were in attendance to discuss the master plan, which highlights a balance between historical preservation and commercial expansion while maintaining the island’s unique identity and promoting sustainability.

In his opening remarks, Architect Felino "Jun" Palafox, Jr. acknowledged the people who were involved in the conceptualization, preparation, and finalization of the Corregidor Comprehensive Tourism Master Plan (CTMP) — the members of the TIEZA Tourism Enterprise Zone (TEZ) Management Sector, the Technical Working Group members, and the Palafox Associates Project Team and consultants.

In pursuit of sustainable development, certain environment-friendly and green architecture and green urbanism features were incorporated in the plans, which include the following:

  • Renewable energy sources such as solar power to generate electricity on the island
  • Implementing effective waste management by providing additional garbage trucks and establishing materials recovery facilities (MRFs) in designated areas
  • Effective water supply and distribution through the reuse of wastewater by utilizing modular sewage treatment plants and native reed bed systems
  • Integration of water harvesting and green building technologies to proposed developments
  • Application of a 45-meter easement from the highest watermark to serve as protection from natural calamities
  • Improved road quality and connectivity to reduce carbon footprint
  • Enhancement and rehabilitation of existing structures and ruins for the preservation of culture and history

It is important to inform the stakeholders about the importance of sustainable planning for Corregidor. The plan provides development guidelines to primarily promote sustainable development to better preserve the historical and natural environment of the site.

The TIEZA Board of Directors affirmed the capabilities and expertise provided by Palafox Associates and endorsed the approval of the Final Comprehensive Tourism Master Plan of Corregidor. With the approval of the plan, the recommendations and guidelines are ready to be carried out to help further protect the character and history of the island, which is one of the most important World War II landmarks of the Philippines.
